The Panaca Fitness Center is pleased to sponsor the Panaca mini-Triathlon, scheduled for Saturday, August 31, 2013, at 7:00 am. Entrants and teams should assemble at Panaca Spring (a mile north of Panaca on the extension of 5th street) beginning at 6:00 am. Body marking for swimmers should occur during this time. Tee shirts will also be given out for those who have not yet picked them up. A final participants' meeting will be held at 6:30 am to answer questions and give final instructions. Unless there are excessive numbers of participants, a group start in the Panaca Spring will occur at 7 am. [Last day to sign up and get your shirt is August 28--there is no "late fee"--you just won't get a shirt for your $25.00]
Philosophy
Completion, rather than competition, is the focus of the Panaca mini-Triathlon. Each participant is encouraged to set and meet his or her own personal goal. This short course (mini-)Triathlon offers something for everyone--accommodating the novice and beginner, while still challenging the experienced athlete.
Timing
Competion and speed are not the focus of this mini-Triathlon. However, to assist in measuring performance levels, finish times will be available. Elapsed times will be computed and posted as quickly as possible after each participant is finished. The clock is kept running during transitions and no split times will be recorded. For those interested, results will be posted here [panacafitnesscenter.com] as quickly as possible.
300 Meter Swim
The swim portion of this event will begin at Panaca Spring. Participants will start at the designated starting line and complete two laps down and back around floats at each end lof a marked 75 meter course. Swimmers should stay to their right of the course float marker rope. Spotters will observe swimmers, but no lifeguards will be available. However, most of the course is less than 5 feet deep, and edges are shallow enough to stand or rest, if necessary. Water temperature is a comfortable 83.6 degrees F., but wetsuits or other gear are not prohibited.
10 Mile Bike Ride
Bicycles should be at the Spring in the transition area north of the Spring prior to the beginning of the swim portion of the event. Bicycle helmets are encouraged and recommended. The entire 10 mile course is on paved road, but even so, care must be taken on turns during the bike section. Bib numbers must be worn during the bike section as well as the running section. Rules of the road and common courtesy should prevail. On the bike path, please stay to the right, as others may be traveling in the opposite direction. Portions of the bike course will be open to auto traffic and participants must obey traffic laws at all times. Water will be available at transition areas, and may be available at run aid stations. The bike section will end in the parking lot behind the LDS Church on Main Street.
5 K. Run
Bicycles should be left in the parking area behind the LDS Church to transition to the running (walking) section of the event. Participants should have their running gear prepared for a smooth [quick] transition. The course will be marked and mapped and will end at the same parking lot [finish line will be marked]. Athletes will receive water and refreshments at the finish line.
Inclement Weather
In case of inclement weather, the race director reserves the right to modify or cancel any portion of the triathlon if weather conditions threaten to compromise participant safety.
Starting this year, by popular demand, we will proctor the Triathlon on the Saturday before Labor Day as it has always been. HOWEVER, we will proctor the exact same course on Monday morning, September 2, 2013 at 7:00 am for those who can only make the event on Labor Day itself. For those of you who are really in shape, you can participate in the Triathlon on the second day for FREE, if you completed the course on the preceeding Saturday!
